I have started unixadminschool.com ( aka gurkulindia.com) in 2009 as my own personal reference blog, and later sometime i have realized that my leanings might be helpful for other unixadmins if I manage my knowledge-base in more user friendly format. And the result is today's' unixadminschool.com. You can connect me at - https://www.linkedin.com/in/unixadminschool/

Benefits of cload are difficult to measure. While costs for physical servers may be reduced, benefits of shared resourcing rarely live upto promises. You also lose control of security, SLA’s and DR options. You generally have to take the word of the cloud provider that these things are just as important to them as to you. In regards to CAPEX Vs OPEX, its also generally easier to fund something via capex as it’s been planned for within the project’s budget – opex is an ongoing commitment and a lot harder to convince CIO’s to pay for. CAPEX you get something bright and shiny to show off to other managers, opex is an expense that needs to be reduced year after year with nothing to wave in front of your manager when performance reviews come along.

Hi Jeff,  right now companies looking for hybrid cloud solutions instead of pure public or private clouds, so that they can address both security and performance concerns without compromising on anything.    And when these initiatives are directly from the CIO office, the performance metrics for the middle level management will take a shift from cost reduction objectives to value added services  :).
