VxVM Troubleshooting – vxdisk list shows "online failing"

There are times that we see the disk status as “online failing” in vxdisk list output, even though the underlying hardware issue is not with the disk but with either controller or some other related hardware. Once we fix the non disk related hardware issue we can clear the failing flag of the disk using below procedure.

Note: Please make sure that you use this fix only, when you know that there is no problem with the actual disk. Otherwise , below commands will force the VxVM to write the data on failed disk, which in turn can corrupt entire filesystem

Step1 : List the disks under VERITAS Volume Manager control to determine which disk is marked bad:

# vxdisk list

DEVICE TYPE DISK GROUP STATUS

c0t1d0s2 sliced disk01 rootdg online failing

c0t3d0s2 sliced rootdisk rootdg online

2. Clear the failing flag for the disk that is marked as failing:

  # vxedit set failing=off ( vxedit set failing=off disk01 )

3. Verify that the flag has been cleared:

# vxdisk list – to verify that the flag has been changed

DEVICE TYPE DISK GROUP STATUS

c0t1d0s2 sliced disk01 rootdg online

c0t3d0s2 sliced rootdisk rootdg online
